Daily Bread Children’s Home Sewing Project

At Daily Bread, our volunteer from Switzerland Beatrice Felber is teaching dressmaking and sewing skills to children at Daily Bread. Currently there are 8 boys and 7 girls enrolled in the course. In Beatrice these children have found an incrediably great teacher and have learned to trust her as a friend and mother figure.

These children have throughly enjoyed their experiences of learning from Beatrice. They have gained the basic fundamentals in how to sew, using the machines and making wonderful products from pin cushions as the first project, to hand bags, into more difficult items like beautiful pilliows, skirts and head scarfs. The training has brought out the best in everyone! Even some of the house mothers take classes in the mornings.

Beatrice has become aquainted with our fabric stores here for purchasing materials and has discovered a new range and world of African fabrics! The children participating in the programme have discovered their talents and have a whole new appreciation for how to make attractive functional items and clothes!

Many thanks to the Bernina officials and management in Switzerland and in East London, South Africa for their very generous donation of six new sewing machines. Beatice and her supportive friends in Switzerland cannot ever be thanked enough for the milestone and positive footprint that is being established at Daily Bread, as a on going project for the life skills devolpment of the children.
