They were invited by Hans Peter to be apart of a Skype training where Hilltop's two techinicans met in the conference centre of East London's news publisher the Daily Dispatch. There they gave instruction on how to set up a Open Source centre to Farshad a IT manager in a village community, where IT information is becomming apart of life in some parts of Afghanistan, as a way to empower and educate.
Open Source Training- IJGD Hilltop Volunteers September 2010

Our volunteers from Germany arrived in Septmeber 2010 to be apart of a exclusive Open Source training with our partners from Linux 4 Afrika. Hans Peter and Franz Apple offered a 5 week workshop in Hilltops conference room to educate Hilltops newest volunteers and IT staff on the lastest Open Source programs. Learning the new information was a real challange at first and also for the IJGD volunteers having to adapt to African culture and customs. Once on location at their projects we where able to install and use this new knowledge, as a result of this successful training, Hilltop and it's partners schools, set up 5 computer centres programmed with Open Source pograms in rural village schools and in township locations.

Vuvu in Germany

I was invited by a German organisation, to take a part in the international work camp that took part in Germany. I started my journey on the 21 June 2010 and arrived on the 22 June 2010. We were actually 3 of us who were invited and this organisation (IJGD) paid for our flights, food, accommodation and they also gave us a little bit of pocket money. I was from South Africa; one was from Kenya and one from Indonesia. We all arrived on the same day at Berlin. We stayed in Berlin for the orientation that was only for three days. On the 25 of June we went to the seminars in Altenkirchen. we were there till the 2 July. We had to split; The girl from Indonesia and I had to go to Wedemak for our first work camp and the girl from Kenya went to another direction.

In our first work camp Tika (Indonesian) was a leader and I was one of her participants. In this work camp our task was to rebuild up the play ground and also paint it, to make it happy again. That was the 3 July till 17 July. On the 17 July we went to Bonn for the middle evaluations till 22 July. On the 22 we went to Wangerooge for the second work camp and at this time I was going to be a leader along with a German girl (Svenja). Our task was to root out the foreign flowers which grew bigger than the native ones! Also we had to root out the small trees from a place called ice pond, the reason for this name was that this place used to be a refrigerator but that was centuries ago. Now that in nowadays there is electricity and pond to so they can put plants in it. We did that and finished in 2 weeks. That was from the 23 July till 7 August 2010. On the 7 August we went back to Berlin where our final evaluations took place. On the 10 August we all went back to our home countries.

I had a splendid time in Germany because these work camps were not only about to work but also to bring people together. We were from different countries and different cultures but it was possible for us to live in one roof, which was cool! I enjoyed it very much because it was more intercultural!
