  • Xhosa Culture


    The Transkei, home to the Xhosa people, is the only part of the country still governed by tribal authorities, and most of the region's inhabitants maintain a traditional lifestyle. The Xhosa people live in the traditional way, with ancient tribal systems still intact.

    The people live in thatched mud-brick huts peppered across the hills, without running water or electricity, and subsist through growing mainly maize.

  • Addo Elephant National Park


    More than 450 elephants, 400 Cape buffalo, over 48 endangered black rhino as well as a variety of antelope species are situated in the Addo Elephant National Park.

    Lion and spotted hyena has also recently been re-introduced to the area. The largest remaining population of the flightless dung beetle is located within the park.

Maersk Container on the Road to the Port

On April 29th at 9:30 am it was a time to say good bye and farwell to the fully packed Maersk container leaving Horhausen for the shipping docks. After a termendous group and community effort full of long hours, laughter and joyful anticipation, the container was packed full and complete. The driver ready with documents in hand and the contents destined for South Africa!

Bicycles, PC's and Laptops in Switzerland for South Africa!

In the past several months friends of Hilltop in Switzerland have made possible a support project linked to Hilltop. Friends and organizers have collected Bicycles, PC's and Laptop Computers. The project went public when two bike shops advertized and two journalists published the action in three big newspapers in Switzerland. Velafrica supported the team with advice and there became the creation of a very exciting community effort! Enomous planning, meticious organization and preparation has taken place with collection points, sorting, de-mounting pedals, checking PC's, the packing and loading involving forward thinking and lots of time to get the shipment just right.

A Warm Welcome to Shama Arnold and Enslin Smith!

Shama has come to Hilltop from Johannesburg to spend three months training with health specialist Ursula Wyss to undertake the study of Ursula's natural health solutions for healing and wellness. Shama's family has known Rommel for the past 50 years and in the course of conversation it became apparent that Shama would like to come and learn from Ursula Wyss. Shama's education and career field is in accounting and office administration. A large departure from the intense city life. Shama is enjoying the first two weeks of her training and has made meaningful contibutions to assist with Ursula's Power Point Presentation on alternative medicine.
